How do you most effectively teach students First World War literature?
It is a question we are often asked, and even more often encounter ourselves in producing our own guides.
We have found that the biggest problems are assembling the requisite tools and resources and then delivering them in a comprehensive structured package. Study guides go a long way towards assisting teachers and students but are still only one component. The same applies to online resources.
The most obvious delivery method is an e-Learning (electronic learning) package.
Most would agree that any complete one-stop e-Learning education solution should:
- Provide a sound educational course structure
- Provide clear and concise directions for teachers and students
- Provide teaching aids, tools and suggestions
- Provide all the required student research and support resources
- Contain constructive testing, support and revision tools.
Our research, and entreated feedback, indicated that many products asked more questions than they answered. Furthermore, they fell short of the expectation of support, assistance and clear direction. Aptly summed up as a "cart without a horse".
As a consequence we have now embarked on a project to develop the Great War Literature e-Learning platform and modules.
In association with Acarta, specialists in e-Learning for education and training, we have developed an integrated e-Learning platform for schools and colleges, with specially created modules relating to the study of First World War literature.
The modules, which support both OCR and AQA syllabus requirements, can either be used independently or in conjunction with the GWLSRC, which provides extensive additional support materials for GWLSRC subscribers.
Each module will comprise a set of units, divided into sixty minute sessions, which can be used in the classroom, for homework, and for revision purposes.
The first module, on Wilfred Owen's poetry, for the OCR AS Unit F661 Poetry & Prose 1800-1945, will be available shortly.
There are several competitively priced subscription options available, details of which will be contained in the information package sent via e-mail, together with access to a demonstration.
Further modules are currently under development and will become available during the coming months. These will include the following:
- AQA GCE Unit 1 LTA1 Texts in Context: Up the Line to Death
